Ashiatsu barefoot massage

The deepest work, without the elbows.

A Japanese-rooted technique where the therapist massages with bare feet, holding overhead bars to control every ounce of weight.

I hold DeepFeet Level 3, the advanced tier of DeepFeet's Ashiatsu barefoot training. Here's what a session actually looks like.

How it works

Gravity does the work. The bars keep it precise.

You lie on a massage table under a pair of bamboo bars. I hold the bars for balance and let my body weight sink in through my feet, from a feather-light glide to deep, sustained compression.

Long, gliding strokes

The whole sole of the foot sweeps from shoulders to calves, lengthening muscle and releasing fascia along the entire chain.

Slow, sinking compression

Heels and arches settle into dense areas like glutes, hamstrings and the low back. The bars let me add or remove weight gradually.

Hands where detail matters

In a hybrid session, neck, face, scalp and small or sensitive areas get skilled hands-on therapeutic work.

Is it right for you?

Safety comes first

Ashiatsu can use up to the therapist's full body weight and moves blood and lymph quickly, so anything that rules out deep tissue massage also rules out Ashiatsu. List everything on your intake form.

Great fit

  • You want deep pressure but dislike pointy elbows and thumbs
  • Chronic tightness in the back, hips, glutes or legs
  • Healed injuries and scar tissue limiting mobility
  • Training hard and recovering slowly

Talk to me first

  • Pregnancy
  • Recent surgery, injury, rib fracture or recent implants
  • Spinal surgery with hardware, or osteoporosis
  • Blood thinners, DVT, thrombosis, aneurysm or varicose veins
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure or heart conditions
  • Active inflammation, contagious skin conditions, cancer, hemophilia or severe diabetes

In some cases Ashiatsu is still possible with a signed physician's clearance form. Otherwise I'll suggest a hands-on or Thai session instead.

Aftercare

Make the session last

  • Expect deep calmFeeling drowsy is normal. Endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin are doing their job. Stay and have a snack until you're ready to drive.
  • HydrateElectrolyte water is provided after your session. Keep drinking water for the next few days.
  • Skip alcoholAlcohol dehydrates you right as your system is flushing, which can leave you sore.
  • Rest your spineAvoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Walking and gentle yoga are fine.
  • Plan your next visitEvery 1 to 2 weeks for chronic issues, or every 4 to 6 weeks for maintenance.
